I would like to share my gratitude to Keir Starmer for his service to our country as our Prime Minister and as Leader of the Labour Party.
As Leader of the Opposition, he turned the Labour Party around, taking us from our worst defeat since 1935 to bringing in a Labour Government for the first time in 14 years.
Under his leadership, this Government has delivered incredible progress: bringing down NHS waiting lists, securing the biggest upgrade in workers’ rights in a generation, abolishing no-fault evictions, introducing new breakfast clubs, and investing in the clean energy that will shape our future.
The decision to stand down cannot have been easy. I know his choice is based on what he believes to be the best course of action for the country and I thank him for his dedication and leadership, both at home and abroad.
As the NEC sets out the next steps in the process to elect a new Leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister, my focus, as ever, remains firmly on Broxtowe and the people I represent. It is essential that whatever happens next, this Labour Government is focused on tackling the cost of living and delivering public services our communities rely on.
A lot has been achieved in the last two years, and there is a lot more to do. The Government must focus on the business of delivering for the country, and I will focus on the business of delivering for Broxtowe.
