Why I'm Standing

I know our area, I was born and raised in Bilborough. My parents came from Jamaica in the 60s to help rebuild this country; my dad worked on ibuprofen at Boots in Beeston and my mum served in our NHS before running a local shop in Radford.

Despite the discrimination my family often faced, their values of hard work and public service were instilled in me from a young age; it’s why I’m a campaigner, councillor, and I’m standing to be your Labour MP.

I began my career in Nottingham at the lowest grade in the Civil Service, rising to a senior manager in the NHS where I shaped new approaches to patient engagement, coordinated a project to address high-levels of teenage pregnancy, and wrote the first Carers’ Charter in the hospital I worked at.

Education is what brought me into politics; specifically, how we educate neurodiverse people. My son is dyslexic and I wanted to help other families struggling against the system, so I set up a not-for- profit company, training teaching assistants and parents to identify and support people with dyslexia in the classroom and community.

I joined Labour in 2012, and have won two Council elections, both times with the highest majority in my ward. I currently serve as a Cabinet Member for Communities, Refugees and Wellbeing. I’ve led successful campaigns against the Tories — protecting local library, NHS and rail services — and secured vital funding for food banks. I am a lifelong trade unionist and co-operator who puts our shared Labour values into practice every day.

My Plan for Broxtowe

With 30yrs experience in the NHS, I’m the candidate who knows how to rebuild and improve our health and social care services here in Broxtowe. I’ll lobby for more staff, better pay & conditions, lower waiting times and higher standards, to reduce local health inequalities.

I understand the struggle families can have trying to get the best for their children at school — I’ll work to close the gap in support for children with special educational needs and disabilities, and support local schools, parents and businesses to unlock the potential of all our children.

The Tories have hollowed out policing and prevention projects. I’ll demand our fair share of funding to put bobbies back on our streets and better co-ordination of public awareness campaigns, with a laser-like focus on reducing violence against women and girls.

I’ll work with businesses, our Council and communities to mitigate poor air quality, protect our green spaces, and advocate for sustainable developments that are in keeping with the local environment. I will prioritise green industries when seeking to attract inward investment.
