It was an absolute delight to visit Florence Nightingale Academy this month to open the brand new Little Learners nursery for two-year-olds. I had a fantastic time meeting the headteacher, dedicated school staff and parents, all of whom share a common goal: giving children the very best start in life.
The new nursery provision is part of Labour’s Best Start programme, which is rolling out school-based nurseries across the UK. I’m so proud that Eastwood is benefiting from this investment, with additional school-based nursery provision opening at Florence Nightingale Academy and Springbank Academy. This is what happens when Government works hand in hand with communities to deliver real, practical support for families.
School-based nurseries make such a difference for children. Being in a familiar school environment from an early age helps create a seamless transition into Reception year. Early years support helps ensure children are ready when they start school and has a lasting impact on a child’s development and wellbeing.
School-based nurseries are also a huge help for families. Having nursery provision on a school site can make daily life that little bit easier, from simpler drop-offs to helping build a long-term relationship with your child’s school. For busy parents juggling work, childcare and family life, these practical changes really matter.
I have been speaking to parents all across Broxtowe, and I know that things have been tough. Parents are working hard but too many feel like they’re not getting anywhere.
