“We owe a debt of gratitude to the mineworkers who built and powered our country for generations. Labour has delivered the justice they fought for,” says Broxtowe MP Juliet Campbell.
At the Autumn Budget, the Chancellor announced that the Labour Government will end the historic injustice of the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme and return £2.3 billion in the scheme’s investment fund to 40,000 former coal miners and their families across the country.
Here in Broxtowe, this decision means a 40% increase in annual pensions, an average of £100 extra every week for 200 former mineworkers and their families.
Last year, Labour ended the injustice of the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme and returned the £1.5billion investment fund to 112,000 former mineworkers across the country. This meant a 32% increase to the pensions of 596 former mineworkers in Broxtowe.
And now Labour have delivered justice for BCSSS members as well. This is the result of years of campaigning by coalfield communities, MPs, and trustees who refused to let this injustice stand. Labour have delivered the fairness and justice all our mineworkers deserve, and this is fantastic news for former mineworkers in Broxtowe.
Labour is making a clear statement: Britain does not forget those who built its foundations. It’s about fairness, respect, and restoring pride to communities that gave so much.
