One of the first acts of the new Labour government was to commission an independent report on the state of the NHS and social care, led by Lord Darzi. The findings painted a stark picture of a healthcare system in urgent need of reform. In response, the Government has begun implementing key measures to invest in medical scanners, reduce hospital waiting times, and increase the availability of GP appointments.

To tackle some of the deeper issues brought to light by the report, the Government is developing a Ten Year Health Plan aimed at making healthcare fit for the future. This plan focuses on three key priorities:
- Embracing technology and digitising the NHS
- Shifting more healthcare services from hospitals to local communities
- Prioritising prevention to reduce hospital admissions and ensure fewer people fall ill
To ensure everyone can contribute, a process was launched, giving local communities the chance to have their say on these proposed reforms. On Saturday, February 8th, Broxtowe MP Juliet Campbell hosted a consultation event at Eastwood St. Mary’s Church, where residents were invited to discuss the Government’s vision for the NHS.
Reflecting on the event, Juliet Campbell MP said:
“The event was part of a series of workshops held across the country to gather feedback on the three priority areas. The insights and opinions shared by Broxtowe residents will be compiled and sent directly to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, to help shape the final version of the plan.
I had a fantastic day in Eastwood chairing our NHS Consultation event about the Government’s 10-Year Plan to improve the NHS and ensure it is fit for the future. Thank you to everyone who gave up their Saturday morning to take part. We had such interesting and thoughtful conversations, and my team and I truly valued your contributions.
As the Government works to reshape the NHS, public engagement will remain a crucial element of the process, ensuring that the reforms reflect the needs and priorities of the communities they serve.”
